Progesterone: The Rodney Dangerfield of Hormones

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Platt] Michael Platt Hormones control every system of the body. Knowledge of how hormones interact gives practitioners an important tool towards achieving wellness in their patients. Those people involved with bio-identical hormones, namely, compound pharmacists, physicians, and nurse practitioners, are already much aware of the importance of progesterone with regards to a womans gynecological well-being. However, there seems to be a lack of appreciation for the role progesterone plays in the area of mens health, as well as how progesterone can be utilized to benefit weight control in men, women and children. Please be aware that there are over 300 receptor sites throughout the body for progesterone. It is beyond the scope of this article to delineate all the potential benefits and actions of this hormone. Consider what I discuss here an introduction to the clinical benefits of this hormone. Let me begin by stating a known fact men and women have identical hormones. Although this fact seems obvious, it is commonly not appreciated. Progesterone is usually considered a womans hormone, perhaps related to the fact that its role in the male body is never mentioned. Interestingly, I consider it the second most important hormone in men after testosterone. One of the main roles progesterone plays in males, as well as females, is to control insulin production. Insulin is obviously an important hormone, but excess quantities can be very detrimental. It is the number one cause of obesity in this country, it is perhaps the number one cause of essential hypertension, it is the number one cause of type II diabetes and it is probably responsible for most of the complications of diabetes with regard to nerve and blood vessel damage, it raises cholesterol levels and is the number one hormone that speeds up the aging process. If you consider that progesterone is the number one hormone that helps keep insulin levels down you can immediately appreciate the tremendous therapeutic effect this hormone has with regard to treating weight problems, blood pressure problems, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, etc. I do not consider progesterone alone to be the panacea for all these problems. But used in conjunction with other therapeutic approaches it provides the ability to enhance whatever approach is being utilized. For example, progesterone by itself is very effective for preventing an over-production of insulin. People who start on progesterone cream are very quick to note that they no longer get sleepy in the afternoon between 3PM and 4PM, and they dont get sleepy while driving or after eating. These are the classic times that insulin levels peak. However, progesterone cannot compete with a diet that is high in carbohydrate content this situation produces an amount of insulin that overwhelms the ability of progesterone to control it. Utilizing certain bio-identical hormones can actually be considered the next step beyond Atkins to maintain weight control. As men approach the age of 50, hormonal changes start becoming more evident. This is about the time that men stop producing progesterone; accordingly, they start developing weight around the midriff because their insulin levels are now higher. In concert with this drop in progesterone, their testosterone levels continue to drop and their estradiol levels start to rise. After the menopause, whether surgical or natural, women continue to make estradiol. However, mens level of estradiol is commonly higher than womens after the age of 50. When looking at estradiol, keep in mind that it is a hormone that contributes to six different cancers in women breast, cervical, vaginal, ovarian, uterine, and colon. It is the only known cause for cancer of the uterus (except for Tamoxifen). The prostate and the uterus embryologically are derived from the same tissue. Therefore, logically it would appear that estradiol is the probable cause of prostate cancer. Progesterone very likely prevents every known cancer cause by estradiol. Since prostatic cancer mainly occurs in men at a time that their progesterone levels are low or non-existant and that their estradiol levels are high would it not seem logical that giving men natural, bio-identical progesterone cream might prevent prostate cancer? A classic example of the importance of progesterone in men may be best exemplified by one of my patients who presented himself to me by saying, Doc, if you dont help me, Im going to commit suicide. He was 57 years old, obviously depressed, and also complained of severe hypoglycemia, asthma, and he had osteoporosis. At the time of his visit he was taking a combination of liothyronine (Cytomel) 25mcg, Armour thyroid and Actonel. Review of previous records indicated that he had been on a variety of regimens for depression and asthma including Paxil, Serzone, Effexar, Singular, and Flonase. He had been on a constantly changing thyroid regimen for over 20 years. Prior lab studies showed a persistently low T4 and usually elevated T3 levels. TSH levels were always around the 0.01 range. This latter fact exemplifies a classic error done by most doctors who evaluate thyroid studies. They consider a low TSH as an indication of too much thyroid being given. They are perhaps unaware that there are several different types of hypothyroidism. The most common is primary hypothyroidism where the thyroid itself is unable to produce enough thyroid. The most common cause of this is a result of Hashimotos thyroiditis. However, there is also an entity called secondary hypothyroidism. This occurs when the pituitary fails to produce enough thyroid stimulating hormone and results in a hypofunctioning thyroid that is frequently misinterpreted as being hyperfunctioning. In any event, the reams of old records he brought with him were virtually worthless. He told me that he had spent over $200,000 in the two years prior to his seeing me; he had been all over the country consulting with the top doctors in the most prestigious medical centers. In addition to their failing to figure out what was wrong with him, they neglected to realize he had adult ADHD, fibromyalgia, and restless leg syndrome. Initial lab studies showed: Free T4 0.8 [0.8-1.8] NG/DL Free T3 816 [230-420] PG/DL TSH cash advance in fishers indiana sba loan processing online installment loans easy extra make money ways loan

Increasing Sales By Using Incentives

By Jeffrey Solochek It’s been an incredibly hot summer and besides having to work the entire time your kids has no school and you had the stress of having to help them with their summer. The local car dealership knows that you will need a new car and they start advertising “buy a New Car and Get a Cruise for Two”. You’re thinking this cruise is worth about $3,000 and you need a new car. This way you can kill two birds with one stone. In reality the cruise only cost the dealership a few hundred dollars but the perceived value is much higher. rather than the dealership having to discount their cars a lot of money with the cruise they are increasing sales, increasing revenue, and minimizing their cost. The Dealership is using what is refereed to as travel incentives. And it’s not just cruises. I’ve seen Disney vacations, trips to Hawaii, Club Med, Las Vegas, and there probably are a lot more. I used to sell on EBay and I’ve tried selling at cost and making a profit an the shipping and handling and I’ve also tried raising the price of the item and offering free shipping. With both methods the free shipping always finished first. There are some people who only search for items that have free shipping. I one bought some CaseLogic CD Wallets on a closeout for a couple dollars. I knew they were selling in the stores for $29 and up. I gave these away free with certain items and my sales for those items were always the best. Rather than take something you would normally sell for let’s say $1000 and discounting it to let’s say $500 why not get one of these travel incentives that cost you less than $100 and bundle it with your item. Doing the math this gives you an extra $400 plus it gives the customer an item that has a much higher perceived value. Basically we are creating a win/win situation. With pricing it’s hard to go up in price. If you normally sell a cup of coffee for a dollar and you decide you want to increase the price to $3 unless you have made some improvements with the coffee the chances of you getting the extra $2 are pretty slim. I use to sell cars many years ago and the customer is always asking for a lower price. Finally by offering a warranty for free which had a perceived value of $1000 and a cost of less than a hundred I made the sale. I was creating a win/win situation by giving the customer more and not having to give a thousand dollar discount for my dealership. It all boils down to perceived value. Just because you pay $200 for a cruise doesn’t mean it’s only worth $200. Cardio Revolution

By Craig Ballantyne Today I’m going to give you the story of how I solved the problem of getting an efficient and effective fat loss program finished in 45 minutes. Essentially, how I invented the strength and interval workouts I use with clients. And then I’ll end with a sample workout for you… But first, let’s take a trip down memory lane to the winter of 98-99. I was but a lowly grad student, studying the effects of androstenedione (the supplement taken by the might Mark McGwire during his record-breaking home run quest in ’98). In my study (which was published in the Canadian Journal of Applied Physiology for any science nerds like myself out there), we had guys use the supplement and go through a couple of weight training sessions. By February of ’99 I was stuck in the lab, analyzing the blood samples using some fancy radio-active isotopes. And when I say stuck in the lab, I mean STUCK. I’d get there at 7am, and record my last data point at 11pm. Sixteen hours of mad science. And if I wasn’t there, I was downstairs in the medical library, studying papers on testosterone and training. Now coming from a very athletic background, this sedentary lifestyle didn’t sit well with me. But there I was, studing for a degree in Exercise Physiology and left with no time for exercise. Or so I thought. Fortunately, I actually had a 50 minute window once per day of “down-time” while the lab’s gamma-counter analyzed blood samples. That left me 50 minutes to get to the gym (5 minutes across campus) and get a workout in the remaining 40 or so minutes. I knew that if I applied my studies to the workout, I could get maximum results in minimum time. As a former athlete, I knew that I had to find a way to stay fit and to avoid the fat gain that comes with working long hours in a sedentary environment. And I also had to stay true to the high-school bodybuilder I once was, so there was no way I was willing to sacrifice my muscle to one of those long-cardio, low protein fat-loss plans that were popular at the time. Instead, I had to draw on my academic studies and my experiences working with athletes as the school’s Strength & Conditioning Coach. I knew that sprint intervals were associated with more fat loss than slow cardio, and I knew that you could also increase aerobic fitness by doing sprints (but you can’t increase sprint performance by doing aerobic training). So clearly, intervals were (and ARE!) superior to long slow cardio. I had seen first hand the incredible results of sprint intervals in the summer and fall, as the athletes made huge fitness improvements and shed winter fat in a short time using my interval programs. I knew that intervals had to be the next step in the evolution of cardio. The biggest benefit of intervals? A lot of results in a short amount of time. I knew that I only had 40 minutes to train, and therefore I could only spend 15-20 minutes doing intervals. Now onto the strength training portion of the workouts. I knew that a high-volume bodybuilding program wasn’t going to cut it – I just didn’t have time. But in the past year I had read so many lifting studies, that I knew exactly what exercises I needed to do to maximize my lifting time in the gym. Those exercises were standing, multi-muscle, movements such as squats, presses, rows, power cleans, and plenty of other standing single-leg exercises. I knew that those exercises would bring me far more results than those people sitting on machines would ever achieve. And I also knew that I had to lift heavier than the average Joe or Jane Gym-goer lifts. I just knew that doing lighter weights and high-reps wasn’t going to cut it. And a research study from 2001 later showed that I was right – when women did 8 reps per set, they had a significantly greater increase in post-workout metabolism than if they did 15 reps per set. So I had my plan. Bust my tail over to the gym, through the cold, dreary Canadian winter afternoon, and do a quick but thorough warmup (specific to my lifts – none of that 5 minutes on the treadmill waste of time). Once I got through the warm-up, I did as many sets as I could in the remainder of the 20 minutes for strength training. At that point, I knew that supersets were the only way to go if I wanted to maximize the number of sets I could do…so the non-competing superset of Turbulence Training was put in place. By non-competing, I mean that the 2 exercises in the superset don’t interfere with one another. So you can use upper and lower body exercises together, or pushing and pulling exercises. Just be careful not to use two grip-intensive exercises together in a superset – otherwise, one exercise will suffer, if not both. And then I followed up the strength training with intervals, as I knew these had to follow the lifting, otherwise it would not be the correct exercise order. Remember, intervals first leads to premature fatigue. Lift first, cardio later. Forget that old wives tale about doing cardio first to burn more fat. That’s junk. You know, I remember the exact day and exact workout that this all came together into the strength and interval program. It hit me as I was finishing my intervals. I knew I had found something that was like fat loss magic. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a way to put it in a pill. But I’ve been able to put it down on paper in all of the strength and interval workouts. The exact workout I used that day went like this… Warm-up 1 set of Bodyweight Squats 1 set of pushups 1 set of Squats with the empty bar 1 set of light dumbbell chest presses 1 set of moderate weight barbell squats 1 set of moderate weight dumbbell chest presses Strength Training Superset #1 Barbell Squats paired with Dumbbell Chest Presses 3 supersets, aiming for 8 reps per side per set Strength Training Superset #2 DB Rows paired with Barbell Forward Lunges 3 supersets, aiming for 8 reps per set Stationary Bike Intervals After a warmup, I did 6 intervals of 45 seconds work and 45 seconds rest, finishing with a cool-down. And from that point in time, I’ve tried to share this and all the other workouts with as many men and women as possible. The same men and women that I would see day-in and day-out performing the same ineffective slow-cardio fat loss programs, and not making a darn change month after month. And every day they would see me, soaked in sweat, feeling great and looking lean, and finishing another workout. Eventually I noticed these other men and women weren’t around as consistently as before, and then soon enough they would drop out completely – after all, they weren’t getting results with their slow cardio and aerobics classes (yep, those were still around in ’99!). And so here we are today…thousands of users later, with national fitness magazines like Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, and Shape spreading the good word about strength and intervals for fat loss. Thanks for being a part of the Cardio Revolution, and for sharing this new and improved fat loss training and cardio system with the world. So when you see someone frustrated with their ineffective fat loss program, tell them there is a better way. It’s research-based, efficient, and most of all, effective. And yes, it goes against the crowd. But it works! His trademarked Turbulence Training fat loss workouts have been featured multiple times in Mens Fitness and Maximum Fitness magazines, and have helped thousands of men and women around the world lose fat, gain muscle, and get lean in less than 45 minutes three times per week. Your Plan For Marketing Success

By Joe Love The most important, yet overlooked aspect of marketing is an actual written marketing plan A business simply cannot succeed without marketing. Whether you are a one person business or have 50 employees, you simply must have a marketing plan to succeed. Just as a business plan is a blue print for the overall success of your business, your marketing plan is the blueprint for your marketing success. Marketing without having a clear and user-friendly marketing strategy is like stringing beads without tying a knot at the end of the string. Your strategy should guide your efforts for a minimum of three years; a good plan should really last ten or more years. The marketing plan is a plan within your business plan. In the marketing plan you must quantify the benefits your customer gets from buying your product or service. You must establish the size of your market. Also, your competition must be evaluated and assessed. In other words, you must be customer-oriented or market driven. Your plan should explain the benefits your product or service has to your customer, how your customer will profit or gain from product or service. Explain why your customers will buy your product over those of your competitors. A good marketing plan should contain six sections: 1. Description of the market. Who are the customers and why will they buy your product or service? Explain what perceived need you fill in your target market. What is your market niche? How will you position your product or service? Your positioning strategy must be elaborated in detail. Your marketing plan must show a deep knowledge and understanding of your market. Do you know all the factors that will effect your sales? Describe in detail the background of your industry, including its size, chief characteristics, trends, and major customers. Project any changes inside or outside your industry that will affect your business. Dont forget to describe your prospective customers in detail, including their demographics and psychographics. Remember, businesses dont buy products or services, people do. You must understand all about those decision makers. 2. Customer benefits. What are the benefits of your product or service to the customer? In talking about benefits, you must relate them to the customer and to the competitors products or services. Here are some of the ways to do that. Your product or service is better than the competitions because it is: (1) cheaper, (2) better quality, (3) more efficient, (4) convenient to use, (5) has fewer rejects or breakdowns, (6) reduces the customers labor costs, (7) lowers the customers inventory costs, (8) improves the customers productivity, (9) improves the customers performance, (10) saves the customer money or time or both, (11) entertains the customer, (12) improves the customers appearance or health, (13) solves problems, and (14) generates profits. 3. Market Share. What are your assumptions about your market share? When explaining market share, instead of just stating what percentage of the market you intent to capture, employ a bottom-up approach. Based on sales projections, using specific customers. A common mistake made by most people discussing market share is assuming they can predict sales by gathering some general numbers on the size of the market, then projecting share from there. The old statement we only want 1% of the market does not cut it anymore. You must explain in detail just how you will arrive at your market share. Document your assumptions with marketing research. 4. Competition. Who is your competition? Compare their products and services to yours, and outline your strategies to sell more than they do. Explain how difficult it is to compare with you. Dont underestimate, ignore, or downplay the competition. Everybody has competition, and if you think you dont, then you obviously dont comprehend the weaknesses of what youre trying to accomplish, and you probably wont be in business for very long. 5. The sales strategy. This is one of the most critical parts of the marketing plan. You can have the greatest technology in the world but if you cant figure out how to get it into the customers hands, youve got nothing! The world will not beat a path to your door just because you have a better product or service! You have to sell the world on buying your product or service. If you think of marketing as strategy and selling as tactics, you have a good idea of what you should put into your plan. How are you going to get your prospects to buy your product or service? You must describe the nuts and bolts of your selling process. What is your distribution process? How will your service and support your product? Explain the selling process step by step, from distribution to sales to servicing of sales. What is your sales strategy? How is your company going to approach its prospects and capitalize on its potential? Go into detail about how your product or service will be sold and/or distributed. How will you advertise and promote your product or service? If possible get and add the actual reaction of some prospects to your product or service? List in detail all your plans for distribution, geographical penetration, roll-out schedule, and future locations. Discuss in detail the pricing strategy youve developed to make your product or service competitive yet still generate ample profits. Identify your prospects, your selling strategy, the size of and the compensation for your sales force, your selling cycle, and both your short and long-term goals you want to achieve. 6. Proprietary protection and uniqueness. Explain what makes your company stand out from the rest. The degree of uniqueness is a major strength in your entire marketing strategy. Explain the range of protection against competition, including patent and copyright protection. What is your strategy to create barriers for others in your market beyond patent and copyright protection? Describe any available technology that is superior or equal to yours. What creative technology or research are you going to do to provide future sales? Armed with a detailed marketing plan, you can develop your creative and media strategies. With a marketing plan in place, the other two strategies virtually write themselves. With them, your marketing materials virtually write themselves, too. And your media decisions are much easier to make. It is very important that every person in your company know each word of your marketing plan, so that they can help carry the banner forward with you. You should invite everyone in your organization to participate in the creation of the marketing plan. With everyones involvement, before and after, you have the assurance, that everyone in your organization is completely clear about the goals and essence of the business. You should review your marketing plan every quarter or at the minimum every six months. Make adjustments in your plan only to account for changing market conditions. The fewer changes you make, the more likely you got it right the first time. Take the time to put your marketing plan together carefully so you get it right the first time. By doing this you will assure your marketing success for years to come. Copyright 2005 by Joe Love and JLM & Associates, Inc. All rights reserved worldwide. A Comparison – The Best Prepaid Cell Phone

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tony_Tate]Tony Tate The best prepaid cell phone is the one that will satisfy you in the end. I was spoiled while I lived in Italy for a few years where there is no such thing as a cell phone contract. Everything was pay as you go. So it really was just a matter of finding the best- prepaid cell phone company. The great thing about Italy and the rest of Europe though was the fact that it didnt matter which company or which model phone you used. All phones worked with any prepaid cell phone card. Imagine my shock when I moved back to the U.S. in 2001 and began looking for the best-prepaid cell phone deal only to find that I was forced to get a cell phone contract. Well I ended up with Sprint and then T-Mobile before enough pay as you go plans became available. Of course the best plans ( in my opinion ) were not with any of the known cellular companies. I now have what I think is the best prepaid cell phone plan on the market. I will only compare with one other company to show you why, though the deals are getting better. I have Net 10. Net 10 is a part of TracFone. They feature phones made by Motorola and Nokia. It is .10 per minute no matter what. So, for $30 I get 300 minutes. With that I also get 60 days of service. That is very simple and easy to deal with. Compared to Cingular, one of the most popular companies offering prepaid cell phones I have a very sweet deal. Cingular has two plans; Best Value and Simple plan. Best Value: Unlimited mobile to mobile .10 per minute A charge of $1 every day you decide to use your phone (no matter who or where you call). Simple Plan: .25 per minute for all calls ( no dollar on the days you call). With Cingular’s best value prepaid cell phone plan you get charged a dollar every day you use your phone and it is automatically charged on you credit card or debit account. What if you use the phone for just one call a day? You can easily rack up another $30 in addition to the cost youve already paid for your prepaid airtime. The Simple plan just puts the squeeze on you for the cost of the minutes. I have the best-prepaid cell phone plan. Net 10 baby! Almost every other cellular company like Cingular has hidden charges and additions to the cost of your airtime that cheat you out of your savings. Net 10 is simple and cost effective. You owe it to yourself to give it a try. [http://www.pay-as-you-go-cellular.com]Pay as you go cellular – service is the only way you should go. Online Dating – 11 Reasons To Go Online For Love

By Alison Edwards Where do you go when you are looking for love? Are you considering joining an online dating site but not sure its for you? Let me tell you how I first discovered online dating and why I firmly believe it fits in with our modern day lifestyles A couple of years ago online dating still had a stigma attached to it. Although people were using the internet as a method of dating, they did not discuss it with friends or colleagues for fear of coming across desperate. I recall a friend of mine who was initially embarrassed to tell me she had joined an online dating site. At the time, I was rather surprised as she was an attractive girl who would be considered quite a catch. However, after chatting to her I completely understood why she had resorted to this method of dating; she was simply tired of meeting timewasters who were not interested in committing to a relationship. Whilst she had no desire to date some of the men who contacted her, there were quite a few she was interested in and she began a dating spell to make any “singleton” jealous. She then struck up an online relationship with someone who lived 100 miles from her. After exchanging many emails and chatting on the telephone, she decided to meet him. Obviously, the distance didnt make the relationship ideal but the spark was there and she enjoyed 6 months dating someone with similar interests, shared romantic weekends together and had a fantastic holiday. Although he didnt turn out to be the one, when I asked if she regretted joining an online dating site her answer was “Definitely not!” Her view was that if she hadnt joined an online dating site, those 6 months would have been spent moaning about meeting the same timewasters in the same old haunts and wondering “what if”. She was simply being proactive in her search for love; after all life is far too short! If youre not convinced online dating is for you, here are 11 reasons why I think online dating has its advantages:- You dont have to wait until the weekend to meet someone. You dont have to get dressed up for a night “online”. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in at home. If you work unusual hours online dating fits in with your schedule. You can log on at any time of the day to suit you; there is always someone online waiting to chat. If you start chatting to someone and then decide they are not what you are looking for, put them back in the net gently and choose another. There are plenty of fish in the sea! If you are tired of seeing the same old faces when you go out, there are people of all age groups all across the country waiting online to meet someone. If you are new to an area online dating is a great way of meeting people whether it’s for friendship or dating. If you meet a few people online in your area, you can arrange a get together for you all rather than meeting on a one-to-one basis. If all of your friends have settled down or you have recently become single what better way to meet new someone quickly than to go online and meet more singles! Anonymous messaging and chat rooms let you flirt to your hearts content without any embarrassment or getting tongue-tied. You will probably find out more about someone online before you arrange a date with them than you would if you had met them in a bar. How To Deal With Rising Interest Rates

By Joseph Kenny For the past few years, interest rates have been quite low, causing many people to borrow large amounts of money for a variety of different expenses. Now these interest rates are about to rise, and they will have a large effect on the personal finances of many borrowers. How do these interest rates affect you? What can you do to prepare for rising interest rates? In this article I will answer both of these questions. When Do Interest Rates Rise? When the Federal Bank increases the interest rates, the cost of mortgages, loans, and credit cards are also increased. Because the average American household owes at least $10,000 in credit card debt, they will be heavily effected the rising interest rates. If you are having a difficult time making your payments every month or are only making the minimum payments, it can be very difficult to pay down the principle when the interest continues to increase. In a situation like this it could take many years to pay off a loan. Dont Be Depressed Even worse, if the economy suffers a major depression similar to what occured in 1929, banks and loan companies may begin calling in debts in order reduce their losses. This means that customers will be forced to pay back everything they owe up front, and if they can’t their homes, cars, or other valuables could be taken from them. While this may sound extreme, history has a way of repeating itself. It is important to make sure you do everything you can to protect yourself and reduce the amount of debt you owe. Try To Pay Your Debt Early One thing you will want to do is start paying more than just the minimum payments. As the interest rates continue to rise, making only the minimum payments will do nothing to reduce your debt. If you don’t have enough money to make more than just the minimum payments, look for ways to cut back on your expenses so that you will have more money left over to pay on your loans. You will want to reduce your spending and set aside a budget that will allow you to make larger payments towards the principle rather than just the interest. Get On A lower Interest Rate Don’t listen to credit card companies that advertise credit cards at a fixed rate. By law, credit card companies have to give you a notice before increase the interest rate on the credit cards, and very few loans are exempt from the interest rates that are increased by the Federal Bank. It is best to transfer your balances from high interest credit cards to those that have a much lower interest rate. Look for companies that offer 0% interest rates for a set period of time. Home equity loans or lines of credit are tools that can also be used to consolidate and pay of your debts. Consider A Cheaper Mortgage If you have a mortgage that features an adjustable interest rate, consider switching to a fixed rate before interest rates begin to rise. This could keep you from getting into a situation where you could lose your home. If you are looking to buy a house, it is important to remember that the cost of houses will greatly increase once the interest rates start to rise. This means you will want to find a house before this happens so that you will avoid paying inflated prices. Lease Or Buy a Car If you are thinking of a getting a car, it may be a good idea to buy used instead of leasing a car from a dealership. It doesn’t make much sense to get a car loan at a time when interest rates are about to rise. Buying a used car has many advantages, but you will want to do your research to make sure you get a good deal. History Of The Pear

By Patrick Malcolm There is convincing archeological evidence from the excavation of the ancient lake dwellers in Switzerland that the European pear, Pyrus communis L., was known by that civilization. It is believed that the pear was known by prehistoric man, but there is no agreement on whether the apple came first or the pear. The ancient pear tree of Europe was fundamentally different from the Asian pear tree, Prunus pyrifolia. English records show that in 1629 stones of pears were sent by the Massachusetts Company to New England colonists to plant and grow into trees at Plymouth, MA. On March 30, 1763 the famous American, George Mason, made an entry into his extensive orchard journal: grafted 10 black pear of Worchester from Collo these are a large course (coarse) fruit for baking and old French pear variety. Fort Frederica at Saint Simons Island, Georgia, was established by the English colonists in 1733, at the same time the city of Savannah was settled. In order to enable the settlers with self sustaining food reserves, a plan was developed by General Oglethorpe to introduce trees and plants for growing both in temperate and subtropical climates that would prove valuable for future farms and fruit and nut tree orchards in Georgia. These objectives were reported according to William Bartram in his book, Travels, that was published in 1773, 40 years later. John Bartram, the father and travel companion of William Bartram, made their research trip to East Florida, Carolina, and Georgia partly to investigate resources and plant inventories abandoned by Spaniards to the English as colonial acquisitions. Prince nursery was established as the first American nursery for the collecting, growing, and selling of plants and trees at Flushing, New York in 1737, Prince nursery advertised 42 pear trees for sale in 1771. John Bartram planted the seed of a pear tree in 1793, and this ancient tree grew and produced fruit until the year 1933. The great American botanical hybridizer and writer of his epic and monumental 12 volume account of his observations on plant development over many years by Luther Burbank stated that basically, there were two genetic lines of pears that he and others had used to improve the commercial quality of pear trees and their fruiting. The European pear, Pyrus communis L., the Asian pear, Pyrus pyrifolia, also called the Korean pear tree, the Japanese pear tree, the Chinese pear tree, and the Taiwanese pear tree. These were intercrossed to obtain a recombination of genes to sift out the complex character mixtures that would hopefully produce superior fruit. Bartram wrote in his Fruit Improvement about a pear chance hybrid that appeared at a farm near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a result of a European pear and the Chinese sand pear that had been planted on the farm as ornamental garden trees. This hybrid occurred on the farm of Mr. Peter Kieffer, thus bearing his name for the first hybridized Oriental pear tree. The Kieffer pear has a pleasant aroma; it is a beautiful and graceful tree with huge white flowers, but this pear is best when cooked into preserves or pies because of its firmness. The cold hardiness and disease resistance make this pear a valuable cultivar that remains a best selling pear tree even today. Other Oriental pear trees that entered the popular nursery mailorder catalogs were Le Conte, Garber, and Smith pear trees. These pear trees became standard cultivars for Gulf State garden plantings, where European pear trees do not grow well. Other strains of pears developed in California were described as huge in size, with delicate colors, fragrance, and excellent quality. One of these hybrid pears measured nine inches high and weighed five poundsa single fruit. Burbank pointed out that the commercial trade of pear frowns upon large pears because of boxing, sorting, and shipping problems, and the average pear fruit buyer does not often preferentially buy oversize pears. The Northwestern United States produce the most commercial pears, generally because of the exceptional dessert quality of the fruit. The oldest pear market sensation is Bartlett (Williams), that grows in a group called Winter Pears, including other varieties. Comice, DAnjou, Bosc, Red DAnjou, and Concorde pears. These cultivars these cultivars have a very restricted area of successful growth, because of their fragile European pear parentage, Pyrus communis, and are not recommended for growing in most United States regions. The pear tree is unique as a non-shriveling fruit being easily recognizable from its normal description referring to the shape of the fruit, pear shaped, a specific form that everyone understands. Buyers of pear fruit are very biased in purchasing a pear in the shape they are accustomed to, and they will often reject the Asian pear, Pyrus pyrifolia, a round or apple shaped fruit. The texture of pears is unique among fruits along with aroma, taste and the idea that pears (European clones) should be picked off the tree to ripen later; whereas, the Asian pears are better left on the trees to ripen for full flavor development. The skin of pears grow in a broad array of colors, green, yellow, orange, red, and mottled, and this makes a great protective shield from the eyes of birds and other animals. Pear trees require longer periods of maturity to begin fruiting than most other fruit trees, but the tree will bear earlier if grafted on a dwarfing quince rootstock; however, most tree merchants offer semi-dwarf trees for sale, and of course, larger trees begin fruiting earlier than small trees. Asian pear trees produce fruit sooner than those trees with European pear ancestry. One factor that has delayed the spread of pear trees since antiquity is the fact that the seeds show poor germination success unless they are moist and most travelers on the ancient Silk Road trading routes dried the seed for selling or exchanging. Fruit buyers of America have shown a dramatic and increased interest in purchasing fresh pears at the grocery store in the past 25 years. The USDA resources state that the per capita consumption of table quality, fresh pears has increased more than most fruits, while the buying of fresh peaches has decreased. Fresh pears can be kept at near freezing temperatures for as long as 5 months for consumer buying later. For backyard gardeners, pear trees can grow 20-30 feet on semi-dwarf rootstock and are well adapted for growing on most soils, even poorly drained soils, preferentially on a pH range of 6 to 7. Pear trees will grow and tolerate temperatures of negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Burbank performed many odd crosses with pear trees. He crossed pears with apples and quince; however, those hybrid trees did not grow to produce acceptable fruit. Pear fruits contain antioxidants and no fat, with health benefits from Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin C, niacin, and the minerals Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, and Potassium. Many cultivars of Pears are recommended for planting. Ayers Pear Tree, Baldwin Pear Tree, Columbus Red Pear Tree, Floridahome Pear Tree, Hood Pear Tree, Kieffer Pear Tree, Leconte Pear Tree, Moonglow Pear Tree, Orient Pear Tree, Pineapple Pear Tree, Sand Pear Tree and the Warren Pear Tree. Four varieties of Asian Pears are also planted: the Korean Giant Pear Tree, Hosui Pear Tree, Shinseiki Pear Tree, Twentieth Century Pear Tree. There are also four varieties of flowering, non-fruiting pears. The Bradford flowering pear tree, Cleveland flowering pear tree, Aristocrat flowering pear tree, and Autumn Blaze flowering pears.
